Do you panic when casting Panic Animals? Do Animals end up kiting you?

Here are some tips on Ranger Fearkiting in EverQuest:

"If you wish to hunt alone as a ranger, then often the most effective way is to use your panic animal spell which you can buy at level 16. This way of fighting means that you do not get hit very often as the animal faces away from you as you damage it. You can use this spell to attack animals up to and including level 52. A common terminology for this type of fighting is 'fearkiting'.

As the spell name suggests, you can only use the panic animal spell on animals. Generally speaking animals are classed as tigers, bears, elephants etc. However sometimes fish and snakes are also included! The only animals I would suggest you do not attack are the occasional ones you find that will give you a faction hit.

The idea of fearing animals is that you cast snare first (snare is a level 6 spell), which slows the animal's run speed dramatically. Then you cast panic animal, which causes the animal to turn away from you and flee in panic. However, because you have already cast snare on the animal, it cannot move quickly. At this point, you take the opportunity to attack it from behind with your weapons, or fire with your bow. As long as your panic animal spell is cast on the animal, it will not hit you, as it will be facing away from you as it attempts to slowly run off. Please note that when you get to level 51, you should swap your level 6 snare spell to the level 51 spell 'ensnare' which lasts up to 14 minutes. Do not confuse snare with your root spells which will immobilize the mob, rather than slowing its run speed and turning it away from you. It is worth setting your hotkeys so that you can quickly cast snare, panic animal and your DoT's (damage over time spells). You will need to keep casting panic animal as it will wear off within a minute or two. Some animals are also immune to snare and must be avoided. You will also find that snare and panic animal resist at times. If this happens, recast as soon as possible.

Before you cast panic animal, make sure you are buffed, including a run speed spell, such as spirit of wolf. Now, check your surroundings. Firstly you want to make sure you are in an outdoor zone as kiting and indoor zones do not mix. A few ways of checking if you are outside is to see if you can cast spirit of wolf, or can summon a horse. If you can do either, you are in an outdoor zone. Secondly find a nice, open piece of zone and check to see how many monsters are nearby, as when you are kiting you do not want to draw the attention of other creatures, especially if they don't like you.

Okay, so now you have found a decent kiting area, locate the animal you wish to attack. Cast snare and then panic animal and watch the mob turn around and slowly move away from you. This is a good opportunity to cast any damage over time spells you have and then attack from behind. Again, whilst you are fearkiting, check around you. If you see an unfriendly creature nearby, then pull back to your original spot and start again. Note that the mob will not cause other creatures to attack you, only you can by getting too close to them. Rinse and repeat."
